Powering earth from farms in space

How electricity could soon come from a galaxy, far, far away.

Japan’s power needs could soon be met by a large-scale solar farm in space — which could generate up to 10 times more power compared to a solar farm on Earth.

A lack of natural resources means that Japan must rely heavily on energy imports and alternative sources to power itself. About 30 percent1 of the country’s electricity now comes from nuclear power, but Japan is hoping to reduce its nuclear reliance in the wake of the Fukushima power plant meltdown.2

One possible solution is putting a large-scale solar farm in space. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has created a road map to set up a solar power station in space that can transmit energy back to Earth by 2030.3 According to JAXA, this system could generate five to 10 times more power compared to solar power operations on Earth.

More Japanese companies are also pledging to source all their electricity from renewable energy by 2050.4 This shift to renewables could spur investment in the nation’s grid capacity and beef up the country’s clean energy capabilities.
