More than meets the eye

China has set its sights on AI-based surveillance that can identify a person within 100 milliseconds. That’s less than the blink of an eye.

As part of its ambitious national road-map to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, China has advanced AI in the area of surveillance that keeps its cities and citizens safe. Its latest AI-based surveillance system can identify a person within 100 milliseconds1 — less than the blink of an eye.

The system, called Sky Net, is incorporated into smart-glasses worn by police officers. The on-board AI-led facial recognition technology recognises licence plates and facial features. As an officer looks at a person or car, the system swiftly checks the visual data gathered against a database of suspects and alerts the officer instantly if something is amiss.

Sky Net was deployed at this year’s Two Sessions top-level Chinese government meetings2. It was also used to keep travellers safe ahead of China’s chaotic Lunar New Year holiday period, helping police arrest at least seven wanted criminals and 26 people using fake IDs. With security a prime concern in major cities around the world, China’s AI-led innovation in surveillance will likely garner a great deal of interest far and wide.

China is well on the road to harnessing the potential of AI and Eastspring Investments has the expertise to identify companies that can benefit from this trend.
